After finishing the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Science, Kyushu University, Mitsutaka IWASAKI was employed by Shionogi & Co., Ltd., one of the leading pharmaceutical companies in Japan, and engaged in researches, product developments, patents and corporate alliances (1959~1994). With his works in the research field, he succeeded in the elucidation of the chemical structure of a natural steroidal compound and its synthesis, which was expected to be useful as an intermediate for synthesizing new steroidal drugs, having anti-inflammatory or other activities. He took his doctorate for this work from Kyushu University. In the patent and licensing sectors, he participated in a variety of negotiations for collaborative research and development and patent licensing on 15 or more new products. He joined also the product development groups to work for obtaining the domestic and foreign regulatory approvals on those products. In 1994, Dr. Iwasaki was named as President of Japan Elanco Company, a joint-venture company established by Eli Lilly and Company, Ind., USA and Shionogi for manufacturing empty gelatin capsules for two years. Since 1996, he has been undertaking principally for foreign entities filing and prosecuting patent applications, and maintaining and protecting patents. While handling many patent applications and patents, he worked closely with outside lawyers in 10 or more patent litigations at courts in his total career as a patent attorney.
